Google Registry Domains

A domain is an address on the internet. Instead of having to remember a complicated series of numbers (called an IP address), a domain name is an easy-to-remember address like google.com or yourbusiness.app.

A top-level domain is what appears to the right of the dot. Using google.com as an example, the .com is the top-level domain. Using yourbusiness.app as an example, the .app is the top-level domain.

The difference between a domain registry and a domain registrar is best explained by the relationship between a wholesaler and a retailer.

When you buy produce at a grocery store, you aren’t purchasing directly from the farmer. You are buying from a retailer who has an agreement to sell the farmer’s goods.

The same is true for domain names: A domain registry is the wholesaler. They own, manage, and set the rules for top-level domains, like .app or .new. A domain registrar is the retailer. They sign agreements with registries to sell individual domain names (the text to the left of the dot) to the public.
